Blank/Silent (1975)
for blank celluloid and silence
Unpublished
Variable Duration
Première
First performance: July 1975; Aquarius Arts Festival, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa; Orion Ensemble
Programme Note
Blank/Silent builds on John Cage's suggestion that "There is no such thing as silence" ('Composition as Process' in 'Silence - Lectures and Writings', published 1968). This was exemplified in his 4'33' (1952) - tacet, any instrument or combination of instruments for which I was proposing a visual complement. "Blank" footage such as leaders/ends of films are spliced together, the only intentional sound being that of the projector.
