Lovedale Hymnody is a transcription of the second movement of Lovedale Harmony for saxophone quartet (2018). The music is a deconstruction of four choral songs from the Lovedale Press Catalogue of Solfa Leaflets: Botani Matshawe (Greetings to the Matshawes) by EAJ Monaisa, Liphala (Whistles) by MM Moerane, Rakgopa by SM Mphahlele, and Isithandwa Sam (My Love) by BJP Tyamzashe. The music is filtered, slowed down, reversed, and recombined, using chance procedures to determine the final music that makes up the piece. Nevertheless, something of the DNA of these songs remains.
