Dogs have featured in many composers’ lives: Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Elgar, to name a few, and in some cases have been immortalised in their music (notably Elgar’s 11th Enigma Variation). The four miniatures that make up this suite were inspired by our Breton spaniel Dolly, and by the composer of an earlier Dolly Suite, also for piano duet. Fauré’s Second Piano Quartet, String Quartet, Piano Trio, and of course his Dolly Suite are the sources of the material, and there is indirect reference to the piano duet Souvenirs de Bayreuth (which he co-composed with André Messager).
