Two Modes Interlocking combines the hexatonic Xhosa bow scale on C in the right hand and an anhemitonic pentatonic scale on C# (all five black keys) in the right hand, resulting in a bitonal or bimodal tonality. It is quite a solemn piece, composed on the passing of the pioneering African scholar and composer J H Kwabena Nketia.
